| The Linguistics of Farting | | No, I don't mean it's possible to fart in different languages! A response to one of my other farting discussions yesterday inspired this. Apparently in Norwiegian, 'fart' means 'speed.' This got me thinking about the German language, where 'fahrt' (slightly different spelling, but same pronunciation) means 'trip,' and a motorway exit is an 'ausfahrt.' 'Father' is 'vater,' pronounced 'farter.'Now, in English, 'fart' has basically one meaning, and the word is onomatopaeic, meaning when you say 'fart' it sounds a bit like one. What about in your language? Does 'fart' mean something different? Do you know any other ways in which 'fart' is used in English? One that springs to mind is 'farting about,' which we say when someone is messing about, or not doing something properly. So come on, exercise your brain cells instead of your farting muscles for once and let's get educational here! | |

| Linguistics | | Here is another joke that I was sent. Hope you like it!A linguistics professor was lecturing to his class one day.
"In English," he said, "a double negative forms a positive. In some languages though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative." "However," he pointed out, "there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative."
A voice from the back of the room piped up, "Yeah. Right." | |
| | Classroom discourse applied linguistics | | I am taking a class in applied linguistics for my teacher's credential this year. For the class, I have to do a classroom discourse. I have already recorded and transcribed the class, (1 hour long) and now I have to analyize it. I have no idea of exactly what to do. I searched google, and there are lots of sites where the analyis has already been done, but no advise about what to do to get to the final product. Any ideas? | |

| Linguistics??? | | I am a second year college student currently studying accounting, but I really do not like it at all. I have gotten into French and it is extremely challenging for me and really the only classes that I have truely enjoyed. So I was looking into changing my major to linguistics and maybe getting my teaching certificate. Is there anyone in this field that might be able to give me some insight into what my options are by getting a linguistics degree??? | |

| | Do you think even if you don't know the language you can understand people? | | Hi all,So, here what I feel. I believe and love to learn about new cultures and languages. But sometimes I feel that we human being surpass the need of language. We can communicate basic expression without a language. Like my mom. I will elaborate it for you guys. I have just posted a new discussion on watching cookery shows and hunger. I feel hungry when I watch these shows and thanks to my mom that she prepares after learning those recipes. Actually, she doesn't know English. But without my help she understand and prepare out of her knowledge. Amazingly, she prepares that very well. So, guys do you think that sometimes language is not all you need to get the idea or understanding? Share if you have experienced this in your life? | |
